Ocean Governance

Ingrid Banshchikova supports Pew’s ocean governance project, focusing on advancing marine area-based protection measures in the high seas, including the United Nations treaty on marine biological diversity in areas beyond national jurisdiction. Before joining Pew, Banshchikova worked on ocean conservation through the World Wildlife Fund’s Arctic program, with particular attention on mitigating risks from industry to ocean biodiversity in the Arctic, such as shipping and oil and gas development. Banshchikova holds a bachelor’s degree in international relations and a master’s degree in international law from Lomonosov Moscow State University, as well as a master’s degree in public policy from Oregon State University.

Anindita Chakraborty works on The Pew Charitable Trusts’ ocean governance project, focusing on deep seabed mining issues as part of Pew’s efforts to safeguard marine ecosystems from the harmful impacts of mining.

Nichola Clark leads Pew's work related to the United Nations treaty on marine biological diversity of areas beyond national jurisdiction (BBNJ) as part of the Trusts’ campaign to address gaps in ocean governance through meaningful international cooperation.

Grace Evans works on Pew’s ocean governance team, where she supports the deep-sea mining and reducing harmful fisheries subsidies campaigns as part of a holistic effort to protect all marine life on the high seas. Before joining Pew, Evans studied and worked in the U.S., France, Turkey, Morocco, and the U.K., including serving as an environmental security research analyst at the Royal United Services Institute in London. In that role, she focused on combating illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing. Evans holds a bachelor’s degree in political science, French, and global studies from the University of Nebraska and a master’s degree in international peace and security from King’s College London.

Julian Jackson heads Pew’s work to safeguard the marine environment by advocating for precaution in the development of a management regime for deep seabed mining at the International Seabed Authority. He also leads engagement in Europe on Pew’s campaign to protect ocean life on the high seas.

Megan Jungwiwattanaporn supports Pew’s crosscutting environmental policy team, providing expertise and coordination to advance Pew’s engagement in multilateral forums, including the United Nations, World Trade Organization, International Union for Conservation of Nature, and International Seabed Authority.

Liz Karan leads The Pew Charitable Trusts’ campaign to address gaps in ocean governance through meaningful international cooperation. Working closely with key stakeholders and partner organizations, Karan focuses on developing policy mechanisms to protect the ocean’s natural assets and address negative human impacts on marine ecosystems at the United Nations, International Seabed Authority, Convention on Biological Diversity, and World Trade Organization.
